Sham Root
Also Known As: Chama Dumpa, Taro Root, Colocasia, Arbi, Chembu
Category: Vegetable → Root Vegetables
Sham Root is a traditional tuber/root vegetable commonly used in Indian cooking. It has a firm, starchy texture when raw and becomes soft and flavourful after proper cooking.
Our Sham Root is sourced through relationships with various farming families in and around Bengaluru, Karnataka, using traditional natural farming and indigenous agricultural practices. The actual farmer and source may vary from batch to batch depending on seasonal availability.
We use natural handling and storage methods rather than relying on chemical preservatives to artificially extend the shelf life of fresh produce.
Benefits of Using
Sham Root has useful nutritional characteristics:
- Provides dietary fibre.
- Provides carbohydrates as a source of energy.
- Contains potassium and magnesium.
- Provides vitamin C and other naturally occurring nutrients.
- Its starchy texture makes it suitable for curries, fries, stews and traditional preparations.
These are general nutritional characteristics and are not medical claims.
Common Uses
Sham Root can be used for:
- Chama Dumpa fry
- Chama Dumpa curry
- Chama Dumpa pulusu
- Chama Dumpa roast
- Chama Dumpa masala
- Chama Dumpa chips

Important Preparation Note
Sham Root should be properly cooked before consumption. Raw or inadequately cooked taro/colocasia can cause irritation or an unpleasant sensation in the mouth and throat because of naturally occurring calcium oxalate crystals.
Peeling and thorough cooking are commonly used preparation methods.
Natural Freshness & Shelf Life
Sham Root is a natural underground tuber and can generally be stored for some time under suitable conditions.
During storage, you may naturally notice:
- Drying of the outer skin
- Minor soil or surface marks
- Changes in firmness
- Small sprouts
- Moisture loss
- Natural variation in size and shape
Why Sham Root May Spoil
Sham Root can deteriorate when exposed to excess moisture, humidity, heat or poor ventilation.
We do not rely on chemical preservatives to artificially extend the shelf life of fresh produce. Proper storage is therefore important.
Any tuber showing significant mould, severe deterioration or an unusual condition should not be used.
Storage
For better freshness:
- Store Sham Root in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place.
- Avoid excess moisture.
- Do not wash before storage.
- Keep away from direct sunlight.
- Remove damaged pieces when noticed.
- Once peeled or cut, refrigerate in a clean covered container and use promptly.
Natural Variation
Sham Root may naturally vary in:
- Size
- Weight
- Shape
- Skin colour
- Flesh colour
- Firmness
- Starchiness
- Texture
- Minor surface marks
These differences can occur naturally due to variety, season, soil conditions, weather, harvesting and storage conditions.

Generally, fresh vegetables are not eligible for replacement because of normal natural variation or ordinary deterioration after delivery.
