Black Sesame is a traditional oilseed with a naturally dark colour and characteristic nutty aroma and flavour. It is commonly used in Indian cooking, traditional sweets, chutneys, podis and other everyday preparations.
Our Black Sesame is sourced from various farming families in India. Different crops are cultivated in different regions depending on soil, climate and seasonal availability.
We focus on sourcing traditional/indigenous varieties and maintaining the natural character of the product. We do not intentionally adulterate our products.
Our Sourcing & Farming Approach
Our products come through our network of farming families rather than from a single agricultural source.
For our grains, pulses and seeds, we prefer traditional/indigenous varieties and products that retain their natural characteristics. We do not represent the product as certified organic unless the applicable certification is available.
The actual farmer/source may vary from batch to batch depending on crop availability and sourcing.
Why Can Black Sesame Develop Storage Pests?
Customers may occasionally notice small black insects or other storage pests in naturally handled sesame and other grain/seed products.
This can happen particularly in warm and humid conditions, which are common in tropical climates. Storage insects can sometimes be present in agricultural products before they become visible and may multiply during storage.
This does not automatically mean that the product has been adulterated or that something has been added to it.
We prefer natural handling and storage practices rather than relying on chemical pest-control treatments to prevent every possible storage insect. Therefore, occasional storage pests can occur in naturally handled agricultural products.
How to Store Black Sesame
After receiving the product:
- Transfer it to a clean, completely dry, airtight container.
- Store it in a cool and dry place.
- Protect it from humidity and moisture.
- Avoid keeping the container near heat or direct sunlight.
- Always use a clean, dry spoon.
- Check the seeds periodically, especially during warm and humid weather.
- Clean and completely dry the container before refilling it with a new batch.
Proper storage at home is important for maintaining the quality of sesame.
About Fungus & White Worms
Because Black Sesame is a natural agricultural product, improper storage or exposure to moisture can result in fungal growth/mould or insect larvae (white worms).
These are different from the occasional storage insects discussed above.
We generally do not offer replacement for normal natural variation or occasional storage insects.
However, if you receive sesame showing visible fungus/mould, white worms/larvae or significant deterioration, please contact us with clear photographs and your order details so that we can review the issue.
