Bay Leaf, commonly known as Tej Patta, is an aromatic dried leaf traditionally used in Indian cooking. It has a warm, woody and mildly spicy fragrance that adds depth to savoury dishes.

Bay leaves are generally added whole during cooking and removed before serving.

Common Uses

  • Biryani and pulao
  • Vegetable rice dishes

How to Use

Add the dried leaf directly to the dish while cooking. Allow it to release its aroma during cooking and remove the leaf before serving.

It can also be lightly roasted and used as part of homemade spice blends.

Natural Characteristics

Natural bay leaves may vary slightly in size, colour, thickness, aroma and texture between batches. Dried leaves can range from greenish-brown to brown depending on the crop and drying conditions.
