Besan Flour, also known as Gram Flour, is made from chana (Bengal gram) and is widely used in Indian cooking. At Sampoorna Swadesi, our flours are made from carefully selected grains and pulses sourced through our farming network.
We focus on using unpolished, traditional/indigenous grains and pulses and maintaining the natural character of the raw material.
From Farmer to Flour
Our flours are made from grains and pulses cultivated by different farming families.
Different crops require different soil, climate and growing conditions, so we source suitable grains and pulses from different farmers and locations.
For our flour range, our focus is on:
- Unpolished grains and pulses
- Traditional / indigenous varieties
- Careful selection of raw materials
- Milling the grain or pulse into flour
- No intentional adulteration
Because naturally handled grains can vary from batch to batch, you may notice differences in the flour’s:
- Colour
- Aroma
- Texture
- Fineness
- Moisture
- Cooking characteristics
These natural variations do not necessarily indicate a quality problem.
We do not call our products “organic” because we do not have organic certification. Our focus is on the source of the raw material and the traditional nature of the grains and pulses.
Why You May Occasionally See Black Storage Pests
Customers may occasionally notice small black storage insects/pests in flours and other grain or pulse products.
We want our customers to understand that the occasional presence of a storage insect does not automatically mean the flour has been adulterated.
Stored grains and pulses can naturally attract insects, particularly in warm and humid conditions. They may become visible only after some time.
Because we do not rely on chemical pest-control treatments as a preservation method, occasional storage pests can occur.
Proper Storage
After opening:
- Keep Besan Flour in a clean, dry, airtight container.
- Store it in a cool, dry place.
- Protect it from moisture and humidity.
- Always use a clean, dry spoon.
- Check the flour before use.
How to Use Besan Flour
Besan is a versatile ingredient used in many traditional Indian preparations, including:
- Pakoras / Bhajias
- Besan chilla
- Kadhi
- Dhokla
- Sev
- Ladoo
- Besan-based snacks
- Coating and batter preparations
It can be used for both savoury and sweet recipes.
Our Flour & Preservation Approach
We prefer natural handling and storage practices rather than depending on chemical preservatives.
As a result, the flour may show natural differences between batches in colour, aroma, texture and fineness.
Proper storage after opening is important to help maintain the quality of the flour.
Replacement Policy
We generally do not replace Besan Flour for normal natural variation or occasional storage insects.
However, if you notice a genuine quality problem such as:
- Visible fungus or mould
- White worms/larvae
- Significant deterioration of the flour
please contact us with clear photographs and your order details. The issue will be reviewed and replacement will be considered where appropriate.
The Sampoorna Swadesi Approach
For us, good food begins with knowing the source of the raw material.
Our flours are made from grains and pulses sourced through our farming network. We focus on traditional/indigenous varieties, unpolished raw materials and careful handling rather than simply treating flour as a processed commodity.
We may not have organic certification, but we want our customers to understand what goes into the flour and where the raw material comes from.
Know your farmer. Know your food.
