Mysore Malliga Rice is a traditional rice variety selected by Sampoorna Swadesi for customers who value traditional rice varieties and naturally followed farming practices.
Our Mysore Malliga Rice is cultivated by our farmer Yedukondalu in Piduguralla, Andhra Pradesh, India, using traditional indigenous natural farming methods.
At Sampoorna Swadesi, we believe that customers should know not only the name of the rice they purchase, but also who grows it, where it comes from and how it is cultivated.
Traditional Natural Farming
Mysore Malliga Rice is cultivated using traditional indigenous farming methods.
Our approach is based on farming knowledge and practices followed by farming families over generations.
At Sampoorna Swadesi, we focus on:
- Traditional farming practices
- Indigenous methods
- Responsible cultivation
- Direct farmer relationships
- Traceability of the source
- Minimising unnecessary chemical intervention
We do not describe this rice as “certified organic” unless the relevant certification is actually available.
Our belief is simple: knowing the farmer and understanding how our food is grown is more meaningful than simply looking at a label.
What Does “Single Polished” Mean?
Mysore Malliga Rice is single polished.
The rice undergoes a single polishing process rather than extensive polishing.
This gives customers a traditionally processed rice product while retaining the characteristic appearance and qualities of the rice variety.
As with other traditional rice varieties, cooking characteristics can vary. Water quantity and cooking time can be adjusted according to your preferred texture and cooking method.
Our Natural Preservation Approach
We follow natural preservation and storage practices to help maintain the shelf life of the rice rather than relying on chemical preservatives.
This is part of our Sampoorna Swadesi philosophy of keeping traditional food products as naturally handled as reasonably possible.
However, there is an important difference between naturally handled grain and heavily treated commercial grain:
Natural rice can occasionally develop storage insects.
Customers should understand this possibility before purchasing.
Why Can a Black Pest Appear in Rice?
This is something we want to explain openly to our customers.
A small black rice insect, commonly known as a rice weevil, can naturally occur in stored rice. SFA explains that rice weevils can already be present in crops before harvest and may only become visible later. They are a recognised storage pest of rice.
Therefore:
Finding an occasional black rice pest does not automatically mean that the rice has been adulterated or that the product has been chemically contaminated.
This is one of the differences customers may notice with naturally handled grain.
What should you do if you find one?
Remove the affected insects and inspect the rice. SFA states that rice containing weevils can generally still be consumed after the weevils are removed and the rice is washed.
For our customers, we recommend storing rice properly and checking it regularly.
How to Store the Rice
Singapore’s warm and humid environment makes proper storage especially important.
We recommend:
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Keep the rice in a tightly sealed container.
- Avoid moisture and humidity.
- Keep away from direct sunlight.
- Do not open several rice packets unnecessarily.
- Regularly check stored rice.
- If transferring to another container, ensure the container is clean and completely dry.
SFA specifically recommends tightly sealed containers and cool, dry storage for rice to reduce the occurrence of rice weevils.
How to Use
Mysore Malliga Rice can be prepared as everyday cooked rice and used with traditional Indian meals.
Basic preparation
- Measure the required quantity of rice.
- Wash gently with clean water.
- Soak if preferred.
- Cook using a rice cooker, pressure cooker or traditional pot.
- Adjust water according to your preferred softness and cooking method.
Tip: As this is a traditional rice variety, you may need to adjust the water ratio during your first preparation to achieve your preferred texture.

Rice Replacement Policy
Because this is a naturally handled rice product, we want to be transparent about our replacement policy.
We generally do not replace rice for:
- An occasional black rice insect/pest
- Minor natural variation in grain size
- Minor natural variation in grain colour or appearance
- Personal preference after opening the packet
Rice weevils are a recognised natural storage issue in rice, and proper storage can help reduce their occurrence.
We will review replacement requests for genuine quality problems:
✓ Fungus / mould
✓ White worms / larvae
✓ Significant infestation
✓ Serious deterioration
✓ Other substantial product-quality concerns
Please contact us promptly with photographs and order details if you believe the product has a genuine quality problem.
